Maths Makes Waves!
نویسنده
چکیده
Waves are everywhere, from the smallest scales to the largest, from waves which oscillate in a pico second, to ones which change over may years, and from waves with length scales smaller than the size of the atom, to waves which stress across the galaxy. Waves lie at the heart of much of modern technology, physics, chemistry, biology, medical imaging, music, popular culture and are all around us. The study of waves also led to major advances in mathematics (both pure and applied), connecting such seemingly diverse subjects as trigonometry, geometry, differential equations (both partial and ordinary), functional analysis, harmonic analysis, fluid mechanics, quantum theory, electromagnetism, integrable systems and thermodynamics, to name just a few. Calculating problems involving waves led to the 19th Century development of the analogue computer, and the problems posed by studying waves remain some of the biggest challenges that we face.

متن کاملThe Role of Motivation in Gendered Educational and Occupational Trajectories Related to Maths
This study examined the continued gender imbalance in mathematics participation in senior high, which has implications for adolescents’ future careers. It confirms persisting greater male participation in maths-related educational and occupational choices among this sample of Australian youth. Gendered course-taking in maths, along with participation intentions for maths-related careers, were e...
متن کاملExploring Adolescent Motivations for Pursuing Maths-Related Careers
Adolescents from grade 9 in Sydney Australia (N=60) were interviewed regarding why they would or would not consider pursuing maths-related careers. Open-ended interview data explored the comprehensiveness of explanations within the Expectancy-Value framework. The Expectancy-Value model is the major motivational framework for explaining students' maths participation choices in senior high and co...

متن کاملFine Motor Skills Predict Maths Ability Better than They Predict Reading Ability in the Early Primary School Years
Fine motor skills have long been recognized as an important foundation for development in other domains. However, more precise insights into the role of fine motor skills, and their relationships to other skills in mediating early educational achievements, are needed to support the development of optimal educational interventions. We explored concurrent relationships between two components of f...
